Background & context

The medium retainer infantry represented the professional core troops of the Amorite city-states of the Ancient Near East - known as Sabum Kibitum. They formed the backbone of the armies of the Old Babylonian and Old Assyrian Kingdoms in the early second millennium BC. Equipped with an axe or sickle sword, throwing sticks, throwing spears, and the typical Amorite shield, they were versatile and powerful combat troops. Since the early Hyksos followers were probably also of Amorite origin, these figures are also suitable for Hyksos armies of the Middle Bronze Age.

On the tabletop

These eight retainers are the shock troops of the Amorite city-states in Hail Caesar, such as the palace-maintained Sabum Kibitum. They open the fight with throw-sticks and javelins and decide it at close quarters with axe or sickle-sword and shield. In Old Babylonian and Old Assyrian armies under Hammurabi or Shamshi-Adad they form the solid core alongside the levies. The early Hyksos were probably equipped in a similar way.
