The hypaspists were Alexander's foot guard, and that is exactly how you build them here: 24 plastic miniatures in 28 mm with command, trumpeter and banner, plus heads and bodies to mix for a unit with a character of its own.

Background & context

Hypaspistai heißt wörtlich Schildträger. Unter Philipp II. und Alexander bildeten rund 3.000 dieser handverlesenen Männer die Fußgarde des Königs, leichter gerüstet als die Phalanx und damit ideal für den Anschluss an die Gefährtenreiterei am rechten Flügel. Bei Issos und Gaugamela füllten sie genau diese Lücke, in Indien stürmten sie Festungen. Aus ihren Veteranen gingen später die Silberschilde hervor, die noch in den Diadochenkriegen als gefürchtete Elite kämpften.

On the tabletop

The hypaspists are the foot guard of your Macedonian army. Between the phalanx and the Companion cavalry on the right wing they keep the line connected, more lightly equipped than the pikemen and therefore more mobile. The 21 guardsmen are joined by three command figures with trumpet and banner. Field them at Issus or Gaugamela, or paint the same figures as the Silver Shields of the Successor wars, who grew out of the old hypaspists.
