Background & context

Philipp II. machte aus dem makedonischen Landadel eine Reiterei, die es so in Griechenland nicht gab: die Hetairoi, Gefährten des Königs, mit der über drei Meter langen Xyston-Lanze, geritten in Keilformation. Am Granikos, bei Issos und Gaugamela führte Alexander sie selbst auf der rechten Flanke in die Lücke der persischen Linie - der Rest war Verfolgung. Nach seinem Tod erbten Seleukiden, Ptolemäer und Antigoniden diese Reiterei und passten sie an: Schilde kamen auf, die Helme änderten sich, und bei Raphia standen sich Reiter gegenüber, deren Großväter noch Seite an Seite geritten waren.

On the tabletop

Depending on the weapons, the twelve heavy horsemen become different troops: with the long xyston they are Alexander's Companions, aiming at the enemy line in wedge formation, with javelins Thessalian or Greek nobles. Shields and Hellenistic helmets turn them into the cavalry of the Successor kingdoms. In games this cavalry is your decisive blow, driving into a gap in the enemy line as at Issus or Gaugamela. Trumpeters lead the unit.
