Background & context

Philipp II. baute aus einem Randkönigreich ein Heer, das mit der fünfeinhalb Meter langen Sarissa kämpfte: beidhändig geführt, allein wirkungslos, im geschlossenen Block verheerend. Alexander trug diese Formation bis an den Indus. Der Preis war ihre Starrheit, denn die Phalanx band den Gegner, den Sieg holten die Hetairen auf dem Flügel. Wo das Gelände den Block auseinanderriss, wie später bei Kynoskephalai gegen Rom, war das Konzept am Ende.

On the tabletop

This second command set by Steve Saleh adds variety to your phalangite regiments in Hail Caesar when you field several sarissa blocks. Historically the phalanx pinned the enemy in the centre while the Companions sought the decision on the wing. You deploy the same way on the table, with the officers at the front of the blocks and the cavalry ready to strike beside them. Avoid broken ground, where the formation came apart, as at Cynoscephalae.
