Description

Five plastic kits that you can build as either the M5 Stuart or the M8 Scott with 75mm howitzer: swap the turret and you are done. A decal sheet is included too. The light platoon that drives round flanks in Flames of War while the Shermans are kept busy up front.

Background & context

The M5 was born of necessity in 1942: the aero engines of the M3 Stuart were running short, so Cadillac installed two car V8s with Hydramatic automatic transmission. The result ran more quietly, was easier to drive and was given a welded hull with a sloped front. Against German tanks the 37mm gun had long been a joke by 1944, yet in the Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadrons and the light companies of the tank battalions the Stuart remained indispensable until the end of the war. The same chassis gave rise to the M8 Scott with open turret and 75mm howitzer for the headquarters companies.

On the tabletop

You can build the five vehicles as M5 Stuarts or as M8 Scotts with a 75 mm howitzer in an open turret. As a Stuart platoon in Flames of War you use its high speed for an attack round the flank, or keep it back as a mobile reserve. That way you look for gaps in the enemy front and push through before he can close them. Built as M8 Scotts, the platoon supports attacks on positions and infantry with its howitzers.
