Description

Product details

Background & context

The US Army's Tank Destroyer Command wanted a hunter that was faster than anything it fought. Buick delivered it: torsion bar suspension, a radial engine from aircraft production and armour plates that keep out little more than rifle bullets. In return the M18 reached around 90 km/h on the road and was thus the fastest tracked vehicle of the war. From the summer of 1944 the Hellcats fought in Normandy, in Lorraine and in the Ardennes, where the 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion supported the surrounded paratroopers at Bastogne.

On the tabletop

The four M18 Hellcats form an American tank destroyer platoon in Flames of War for games from summer 1944. Their 76 mm gun penetrates the armour of almost any enemy tank, but their own armour only stops rifle fire. So make use of their high speed: place them in concealment on a flank, fire, and change position before the enemy can respond. A decal sheet is included, and the scale is 15 mm.
