Wehrdienst war in den Palastwirtschaften des Alten Orients eine Abgabe wie Korn oder Arbeitsleistung: Wer Land vom König hielt, stellte im Feldzug Männer. Ausgerüstet wurden sie knapp - Speer, vielleicht ein Schild - und in dichten Reihen aufgestellt, wo Tiefe mehr zählte als Ausbildung. Hethiter, Mitanni, Kassiten, mittelassyrische Könige und die syrisch-kanaanäischen Stadtstaaten füllten so den größten Teil ihrer Schlachtordnung.

On the tabletop

This pack adds eight metal figures to an unfinished block of levy spearmen in Hail Caesar. In dense ranks, depth counts for more than training with troops like these. Spear and perhaps a shield were all the men had, serving as a duty owed for land held from the king. You field them in the armies of the Hittites, Mitanni and Kassites, the Middle Assyrian kings and the Syro-Canaanite city states, whose battle lines consisted largely of such foot soldiers.
