Background & context

The so-called Hupshu were the common farmers and city dwellers conscripted in the Bronze Age as a compulsory militia by the city-states of Syria, Canaan, Mitanni, Kassite Babylonia, and the Hittite Empire. Armed with a light spear and a round or oval wicker shield, they formed the bulk of the infantry in these armies. Their simple equipment and loose fighting style clearly distinguished them from the professional household troops of their lords. The figures are also suitable for early Hebrew armies and nomadic desert peoples such as the Midianites, Amalekites, or early Arameans.

On the tabletop

In the ancient Near East, the farmers and craftsmen a king called up for a campaign were known as hupshu. These eight spearmen show them with a light spear and a wicker shield, and without armour. In Hail Caesar they make up the bulk of your foot for armies of Mitanni, Assyria, Babylon or the Syrian cities. Their job is to hold the line while your household troops and chariots decide the battle.
