Der Wurfspeer war die Waffe derer, die sich keine Rüstung leisten konnten. Städte und Stämme des Nahen Ostens hoben solche Männer im Kriegsfall in Masse aus: kurze Ausbildung, billige Bewaffnung, sofort einsetzbar. Auf dem Schlachtfeld sicherten sie Flanken, durchkämmten unwegsames Gelände und hielten gegnerische Plänkler von der eigenen Hauptlinie fern. Zwischen Nil und Zagros änderte sich an dieser Rolle über Jahrhunderte kaum etwas.

On the tabletop

Javelins were the weapon of men without armour, and that is how you use these eight metal figures in Hail Caesar. Light javelinmen guard the flanks, move into rough ground and keep enemy skirmishers away from your main line. Because this job hardly changed between the Nile and the Zagros for centuries, they suit Sumerians, Akkadians, Hyksos, Mitanni, Kassites, Assyrians and Canaanite city states. One pack can therefore serve several armies of the ancient Near East.
