    Product details

    Background & context

Levy archers represent the common citizen levies and nomadic warriors of the early and middle Bronze Age (c. 3000-1200 BC). As Hupshu, or indentured levy, they were conscripted into the armies of the Sumerian, Akkadian, and Syro-Canaanite city-states. Equipped with simple bow weapons and light clothing - knee-length tunics or ankle-length robes - they formed the light skirmisher line in front of the heavier regular troops. These figures are suitable for a variety of Bronze Age armies, including Sumerian, Akkadian, Amorite, early Elamite, Mitanni, Kassite Babylonian, Middle Assyrian, and Syro-Canaanite forces.

    On the tabletop

From Sumer to Mitanni and from the Kassites to Canaan, the simple levy archer looked almost the same for centuries. That is why these eight figures fit a great many Bronze Age armies of the Near East in Hail Caesar. Barefoot, unarmoured and with a simple bow, they belong behind or beside your spearmen, from where they shoot at the enemy. Bedouin and hill tribes also supplied archers like these as mercenaries or auxiliaries.
