    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    At the end of the Early Bronze Age, the late city-states of Mesopotamia - above all the Akkadian Empire and the Neo-Sumerian successor states - shaped warfare in the Two Rivers Land. Their heavily armed spearmen formed the dense shock combat line of the battle array, comparable to an early phalanx. Large body shields made of wickerwork or leather protected the front ranks, while the rear ranks engaged in combat with long thrusting spears. These troops were also found in Elamite and early highland armies as household troops or mercenaries.

    Einsatz im Spiel

    Later City-State Spearmen with Shields represent a cohesive spear line in Hail Caesar for Mesopotamian, Syrian, or Elamite Bronze Age city-state and palace armies. In the game, they stabilize the main battle line, hold ground, and tie up opponents while lighter troops protect the flanks. The unit functions best in formation and loses effectiveness when deployed in unfavorable terrain or in isolation.
