Background & context

Nach dem Zusammenbruch des Akkad-Reiches sammelte die 3. Dynastie von Ur Südmesopotamien um 2100 v. Chr. noch einmal ein. Als sie fiel, teilten amoritische Dynastien in Isin, Larsa und Eshnunna das Erbe. Bildquellen wie die Stele des Ur-Nammu zeigen dichte Speerreihen hinter einer Schildwand - die älteste bekannte Form geschlossener Fußkampftaktik. Mit dem amoritischen Einfluss wurde der Schild kleiner und die Formation beweglicher.

On the tabletop

After the 3rd Dynasty of Ur, Amorite rulers in Isin, Larsa and Eshnunna took over its legacy, and their spearmen continued to fight in close order. The eight metal figures carry the smaller Amorite shield and the long thrusting spear. In Hail Caesar they provide the main battle line of any Amorite kingdom, as an alternative to the retainer axemen. In a dense block they take the enemy's charge and hold the line.
