Background & context

Nach dem Zerfall des Reichs von Akkad rangen die Stadtstaaten Mesopotamiens erneut um Land, Wasser und Handelswege. Ihre Heere standen in dichten Speerblöcken, wie sie schon die sumerische Geierstele zeigt - eine der ältesten Darstellungen einer geschlossenen Formation überhaupt. Wie diese Reihen im Einzelnen ausgerüstet waren, bleibt Auslegungssache, weil Bildquellen rar sind. Dieselben Truppen taugen auch als Haustruppen oder Söldner in frühen elamitischen Heeren.

On the tabletop

In Hail Caesar these Mesopotamian spearmen form the main battle line of the Akkadian and Neo-Sumerian successor states at the end of the Early Bronze Age. You deploy the eight metal figures as a dense block of spears in the centre of your army. In Early Elamite armies they serve as household troops or mercenaries. How such ranks were equipped in detail is debated because pictures are scarce; the Sumerian Stele of the Vultures is taken as the early model.
