Product details

Background & context

The Kushites originated from the area of modern-day Sudan, south of Egypt, and were present as mercenaries and tributaries in the Persian army of Xerxes. Herodotus describes them as the most impressive warriors of antiquity: clad in lion and leopard skins, painted with vermilion and white, and armed with six-foot-long bows made of palm wood. Although the Kingdom of Kush was never part of the Persian Empire, they regularly supplied soldiers for Persian campaigns - including the Persian Wars against Greece.

On the tabletop

With their tall palm-wood bows, the eight Kushites give you a unit of archers in Hail Caesar that engages the enemy at range. Herodotus lists them in the army of Xerxes, so they suit a Persian army as a contingent. Shooting from rough ground or in front of your own infantry, they wear the enemy down before the close-combat troops meet. Animal skins and body paint make your unit instantly recognisable on the table.
