Description

North Korean regimental-level reconnaissance companies were equipped with the Soviet PPSh 41-a submachine gun with a high rate of fire and a 71-round drum magazine. These ten metal miniatures represent precisely these specialized SMG squads that spearheaded the KPA advance in the opening weeks of the Korean War in 1950.

Background & context

The North Korean People's Army (KPA) was the most powerful military force on the Korean Peninsula at the outbreak of war in June 1950 - equipped with Soviet technology, reinforced by veterans of the Chinese Civil War, and tightly organized according to the Soviet model. Dedicated submachine gun companies were established at the regimental level, with their primary task being reconnaissance for the infantry regiment. Every soldier in these units carried the PPSh 41, a Soviet submachine gun with a 71-round drum magazine, which allowed for enormous firepower at short ranges. The early superiority of the KPA over the surprised South Korean and UN forces is particularly evident in the quality and specialization of these reconnaissance units.

On the tabletop

At regimental level the Korean People's Army formed dedicated companies in which every man carried a PPSh 41 and which served as the regiment's reconnaissance. These ten metal figures make up such a squad for Bolt Action in the Korean War. With submachine guns the squad is strongest at close range, so use buildings and cover to get near the enemy. It suits the opening attacks from 25 June 1950 in particular.
