    Beschreibung

    The Korean People's Army Light Machine Gun Squad was the tactical backbone of North Korean infantry units - ten men strong, equipped with the Soviet DP light machine gun, which earned its nickname "record player" from its distinctive round disc magazine. Formed on the model of the Red Army and reinforced with veterans of the Chinese Civil War, KPA units were considered one of the most dangerous opponents on the Korean Peninsula in 1950.

    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The Korean People's Army was well prepared at the outbreak of the Korean War in June 1950: between 150,000 and 200,000 men strong, equipped with Soviet materiel and reinforced by veterans from the Chinese Civil War. The basic squad of the KPA consisted of ten men under a sergeant, including an LMG team with the DP light machine gun - affectionately called "record player" by soldiers because of its round disc magazine. The ordinary KPA soldiers were considered tough and resilient against the enemy, the climate, and the harsh demands of their superiors - a characteristic that gave the early attacks on South Korean and UN forces their devastating effect.
