The Chinese People's Volunteer Army in the Korean War was not a regular armed force in the Western sense - its officers bore functional titles instead of ranks, and its weapons originated from Soviet, American, and Chinese domestic production. This set brings the typical support elements to the table: command personnel, medium machine guns, and mortars, which formed the backbone of Chinese infantry tactics.

Background & context

The Chinese People's Volunteer Army entered the Korean War in the autumn of 1950 and decisively shaped the conflict. Its officers did not hold classic military ranks but rather functional titles such as Platoon Leader or Company Commander-a legacy of the Communist Party's political structure. The infantry's heavy support weapons frequently included a mix of captured US weapons and Chinese-made arms: The Type 24 machine gun was a Chinese copy of the German MG08/15, while medium mortars of Russian and French origin provided firepower at the battalion level. This tactical flexibility, coupled with a sparse supply situation, characterized the Chinese way of fighting in Korea.

On the tabletop

Officers plus figures for medics or forward observers form the headquarters of your Chinese force in Bolt Action, together with a Type 24 MMG and a medium mortar with crews. The Type 24, a copy of the MG 08/15 Maxim, keeps infantry under sustained fire. The mortar fires over cover, and in the battalion such tubes were grouped into small batteries. The army had no ranks, and officers were simply called platoon or company commander.
