A large portion of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army consisted of poorly trained recruits and former civil war soldiers, some of whom were conscripted under duress. Armed with simple rifles and grenade pouches, these units formed the bulk of the CPVA's infantry in the Korean War. Their combat effectiveness was unpredictable - some units performed creditably, while others required the guidance of political officers.
