    Product details

    Background & context

Kabuki theatre emerged in Kyoto at the beginning of the 17th century and became the most popular stage art of the towns in the Edo period. Before that, the warrior nobility had supported the more solemn Noh theatre, played on roofed wooden stages. Temples and shrines regularly held performances at festivals. Ema are small wooden boards on which visitors write their wishes and hang them up within the shrine grounds.

    On the tabletop

The stage gives your village square a fixed point for the fighting to revolve around, such as a raid during a performance. At 300 mm wide it blocks lines of sight across the square, and the raised floor gives shooters a good view. Place the two ema boards along paths or in front of a shrine. Together with minka houses, hokora and a temizuya, you get a place where samurai and townsfolk meet.
