Product details

Background & context

In November 1943 Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands became the first major target of the American offensive in the Central Pacific. The Japanese garrison had fortified the small island of Betio densely with bunkers, barbed wire and coastal guns. Because many landing craft grounded on the reef, the Marines had to wade hundreds of metres through the water, and in about three days around 1,000 of them were killed, while hardly any of the defenders survived.

On the tabletop

Place the two hexagonal pillboxes on a stretch of beach or behind a line of barbed wire so the attacker has to knock them out first during a landing. Being low, they sit well among sandbags and palm stumps. As a pair they cover a section together; on their own each makes an objective for engineers carrying demolition charges.
