    Product details

    Background & context

The Scorpio was a light torsion artillery piece assigned to each Roman centuria. With a rate of fire of up to four shots per minute, it fired heavy bolts with such force that neither shields nor armor offered sufficient protection. In pitched battles, the Scorpiones of a legion were grouped into batteries and positioned on elevated ground to decimate enemy formations before the infantry engaged in close combat. The device was considered a technological superiority of Rome over most adversaries during the Imperial era.

    On the tabletop

A scorpion accompanied every Roman century into the field, and this plastic kit provides one such engine with a crew of two. It was the smallest of the Roman torsion engines, and two men were enough to move and operate it. In Hail Caesar you place it behind the cohorts of your Imperial legion, where shields and armour offer little protection against its bolts. Several engines can be grouped into a battery, as Rome did before Jerusalem in the year 70.
