Background & context

Die Auxilia rekrutierte Rom aus den Provinzen und bei Verbündeten: Bataver, Thraker, Syrer, Gallier, also Männer ohne Bürgerrecht, die es nach fünfundzwanzig Dienstjahren für sich und ihre Kinder bekamen. Ausgerüstet waren sie leichter als die Legionäre, mit Kettenhemd, ovalem Schild und Speer, und standen im Gefecht oft an den Flanken. Ihre Reitereinheiten stellten fast die gesamte römische Kavallerie. Zahlenmäßig war rund die Hälfte des Heeres Hilfstruppe.

On the tabletop

This sprue adds four spearmen with oval shields to a unit of Roman auxiliaries in Hail Caesar. Auxiliaries were more lightly equipped than legionaries and often stood on the wings in battle while the legions held the centre. That is how you use them on the table as well: as flank guards for your legion. They were recruited in the provinces and among allies, for example among Batavians, Thracians, Syrians or Gauls.
