Background & context

Die illyrischen Stämme saßen an der Ostküste der Adria, in einem Land aus Karst und Schluchten, in dem große Schlachtordnungen wenig taugten. Entsprechend kämpften sie: Überfall, Hinterhalt, Rückzug in die Berge, dazu Seeräuberei, die Rom schließlich zum Eingreifen brachte. Reiterei spielte kaum eine Rolle. Wer Rang hatte, zeigte das über Rüstung, und erbeutete oder eingehandelte griechische Stücke waren dabei Statussymbol und Ausrüstung zugleich.

On the tabletop

Illyrian nobles are the best-armoured warriors of their army, with bronze breastplates, greaves and helmets. In Hail Caesar you field the eight figures either as shock troops against the enemy line or as heavily armoured skirmishers attacking with javelins. Illyrian armies had little cavalry and relied on raids and ambushes. Next to the more lightly equipped warriors, the nobles form the elite of your Illyrian force.
