The Hungarian paratroopers were among the toughest elite units on the Axis side and wrote a remarkable chapter in the last years of the war - from the defensive battles around Budapest to the retreat to Austria. This metal set depicts a complete assault section of this rare unit for Bolt Action.

Background & context

The 1st Hungarian Paratrooper Battalion was formed in 1940 and saw its first combat action in 1941 against Yugoslavia. From December 1944, the paratroopers were deployed as crisis troops, as part of the elite Szent László Division, to the defensive rings around Budapest. Despite heavy losses, they were explicitly praised in German army reports for their aggressive fighting spirit against the Soviet superiority. Even after the fall of Budapest, these units continued fighting during the retreat to Austria, where they eventually became American prisoners of war.

On the tabletop

Hungary's only parachute battalion was formed in 1940 and captured the Franz Josef Canal during the campaign against Yugoslavia in 1941. It did not see combat again until 19 December 1944, when it plugged gaps in the Budapest defence rings as part of the Szent László Division. With the ten metal figures you build an assault squad for Bolt Action games around Budapest and the retreat into Austria in 1945. Against overwhelming Soviet attacks the men fought aggressively and suffered heavy losses.
