Product details

Background & context

In the Carpathians Hungary had a natural north-eastern frontier, and troops who were at home there. The army recruited mountain brigades from the border regions, reinforced by Székely border guards who knew winter in the highlands before they ever wore a uniform. These formations were used against partisans in Ukraine, in the Wooded Carpathians and, from 1944, right at the passes through which the Red Army pushed onto Hungarian territory. Equipment here meant crampons, rope and pack animals rather than lorries.

On the tabletop

Hungary fielded its own mountain units throughout the war, often from men with experience at altitude, and trained them hard. The squad wears climbing gear and brings an NCO with a submachine gun, a second SMG gunner, a light machine gun and seven riflemen. In a Hungarian rifle platoon for Bolt Action you use it where slopes, woods and rocks dominate the table. Such units fought in the Carpathians and from 1944 in the mountain passes.
