Product details

Background & context

The 25mm SA-34 was developed between the wars as a weapon that two men could still push into position by hand. Its small calibre is deceptive: with its high muzzle velocity it penetrated the sides of almost all German tanks in 1940, whereas against the front plates of the Panzer III and IV it was a close-run thing. There were practically no high-explosive shells, so the gun was useless against infantry. It was issued to infantry and cavalry alike.

On the tabletop

The four Hotchkiss guns form a French anti-tank platoon in Flames of War for games set around 1940 in 15 mm scale. The small 25 mm gun is easy to hide behind walls and hedges and penetrates the side armour of most German tanks of the period. Deploy the platoon so that approaching vehicles have to show you their flank. Against infantry the guns achieve very little, so you need your own riflemen and machine guns for that job.
