Background & context

Die hethitischen Heere lebten von ihren Streitwagen, doch ohne Fußvolk hätte kein Wagen Raum zum Wirken gehabt. Speerträger mit großem Schild bildeten die Achse, an der sich der Gegner festlief, während die Wagen in die offene Flanke fuhren. Bei Kadesch um 1274 v. Chr. stand dieses Zusammenspiel gegen Ramses II. auf dem Prüfstand und hielt. Die Figuren zeigen das Aufgebot der frühen Zeit, bevor sich Bewaffnung und Rüstung in der Spätbronzezeit wandelten.

On the tabletop

In the Hittite army, spearmen with large shields formed the solid centre on which an attack was meant to break. In Hail Caesar you deploy the eight metal figures as a closed line that pins the enemy while your chariots drive into its open flank. At Kadesh around 1274 BC this combination held against the army of Ramesses II. The figures show the foot soldiers of the early Hittite kingdom, before arms and armour changed in later times.
