Background & context

Die Heere der späten Bronzezeit lebten vom Streitwagen, getragen wurden sie aber von aufgebotenen Bauern und Kontingenten der Vasallen. Das hethitische Großreich zog bei Bedarf ganze Landstriche zum Dienst ein - bei Kadesch 1274 v. Chr. brachte Muwatalli II. nach ägyptischer Lesart Zehntausende ins Feld. Die Bogenschützen dieses Aufgebots waren dürftig ausgerüstet, dafür zahlreich, und ihr Beschuss weichte Formationen auf, bevor die Wagen einbrachen.

On the tabletop

Eight simple metal archers give your Late Bronze Age army in Hail Caesar massed shooting. You place them in ranks behind or beside chariots and spearmen, so that their arrows weaken enemy formations before the chariots charge. They suit Hittites, Mitanni, Kassites and their neighbours. If you want to refight Kadesh in 1274 BC, where Muwatalli II brought a huge levy to the field, you will field several such units.
