    Product details

    Background & context

The Hittite Empire was one of the most powerful states in the Ancient Near East in the 13th century BC. Its sphere of influence stretched from the Ionian coast to Syria. The heavy chariots of the Late Period were considerably more massive than earlier models - the axle was shifted further forward to carry a three-man crew of driver, spearman, and archer. At the famous Battle of Kadesh against Egypt, the Hittites deployed thousands of such chariots - a testament to their strength and military organization.

    On the tabletop

Driver, spearman and shield bearer: the heavy Hittite chariot went into battle with three men aboard. Compared with the two-man Egyptian chariot it was heavier and slower, but it carried enough weight to break into enemy infantry with spears. In Hail Caesar you therefore use it in close combat rather than as a shooting platform. The metal chariot, team and three crew figures belong in a Hittite imperial army, for example at Kadesh.
