    Product details

    Background & context

The Republican Roman Army was among the most battle-hardened forces of antiquity, relying on a proven line system of heavy and light infantry that could be adapted to virtually any opponent. In the third century BC, Rome entered a decades-long struggle for survival against Carthage, a North African power that seriously threatened the young superpower with a campaign on Italian soil. Rome's response was resolute: instead of entrenching defensively, the army shifted the conflict to enemy territory. Scipio Africanus, one of the most significant generals in Roman history, brought this counter-strategy to a decisive conclusion, thereby securing Rome's continued rise to dominant power in the Mediterranean. The kit depicts the entire spectrum of this army - from the core force of citizen legionaries to the diverse allies and auxiliary units from various regions.

    On the tabletop

You deploy the Roman foot in three lines, 8 bases each of Hastati, Principes and Triarii with 30 figures per base, and in front of them the 8 bases of Velites as a skirmish screen. Your own horse, with 3 bases each of heavy and light cavalry, is thin, so 4 bases of Gallic-Celtic and 4 bases of Spanish horsemen help hold the wings. You lead Celtiberians and Italian allies, 6 bases of 20 figures each, as divisions of their own beside the legions, with Numidians, Balearians, Ligurians and Caetrati in front, 4 skirmish bases each. Scipio in Warlord Resin has overall command, and the 8 mounted commanders lead the divisions.
