    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The Republican Roman Army was among the most battle-hardened forces of antiquity, relying on a proven line system of heavy and light infantry that could be adapted to virtually any opponent. In the third century BC, Rome entered a decades-long struggle for survival against Carthage, a North African power that seriously threatened the young superpower with a campaign on Italian soil. Rome's response was resolute: instead of entrenching defensively, the army shifted the conflict to enemy territory. Scipio Africanus, one of the most significant generals in Roman history, brought this counter-strategy to a decisive conclusion, thereby securing Rome's continued rise to dominant power in the Mediterranean. The kit depicts the entire spectrum of this army - from the core force of citizen legionaries to the diverse allies and auxiliary units from various regions.
