    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The armed forces of the Roman Republic were considered one of the most remarkable military organizations of antiquity. Unlike the later professional legions, this system relied on conscripted citizens who served in different combat units depending on their wealth and experience. The three-tiered structure of younger skirmishers, experienced heavy infantry, and the veteran-like spearmen of the rear ranks allowed for a tactical depth that was unusually flexible for its time. Light skirmishers disrupted enemy formations before the heavily armed troops engaged in close combat. This structure proved its worth in decades of conflicts across various Mediterranean theaters of war.
