Product details

Background & context

The armed forces of the Roman Republic were considered one of the most remarkable military organizations of antiquity. Unlike the later professional legions, this system relied on conscripted citizens who served in different combat units depending on their wealth and experience. The three-tiered structure of younger skirmishers, experienced heavy infantry, and the veteran-like spearmen of the rear ranks allowed for a tactical depth that was unusually flexible for its time. Light skirmishers disrupted enemy formations before the heavily armed troops engaged in close combat. This structure proved its worth in decades of conflicts across various Mediterranean theaters of war.

On the tabletop

In miniature, this follows the same structure as a large legion: 4 bases of Hastati in front, 4 bases of Principes behind them and 4 bases of Triarii as the last line, each base with 30 figures. The 4 bases of Velites run ahead and harass the enemy before the heavy infantry closes in. On the wings go the 8 heavy cavalrymen for the charge into the flank and the 8 light ones for skirmishing and pursuit. With 4 mounted commanders you lead the division as one or split cavalry and foot. On its own it is enough for a small game, next to an existing Roman army it becomes another division.
