    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The conflicts between Rome and Carthage were among the most consequential in the ancient world, determining dominance over the entire Mediterranean region. Both sides had exceptional generals: Carthage relied on a diverse army of mercenaries and allies from Numidians, Iberians, Celts, and other confederates, while Rome trusted the Republic's disciplined legions and Italic allied contingents. Hannibal Barca crossed the Alps with an army including war elephants and repeatedly brought Rome to the brink of defeat - until Scipio Africanus carried the war to North Africa and decisively defeated Carthage at Zama. The Punic Wars laid the foundation for Rome's rise to undisputed superpower of the Mediterranean.
