    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    In the third century BC, the Carthaginian Empire developed into one of the most powerful players in the western Mediterranean, its sphere of influence stretching from North Africa across the Iberian Peninsula. The Carthaginian army was characterized by exceptional diversity: in addition to core Libyan troops, the generals relied on a wide network of allied and mercenary contingents from Iberia, Gaul, Numidia, and other regions. Among the most distinctive elements of this force were the Numidian light cavalry and the legendary African war elephants, which were used on the battlefield as a psychological and tactical weapon. Hannibal Barca is considered one of the most significant military commanders of antiquity - his daring campaign across the Alps and his ability to forge heterogeneous troop contingents into a powerful army made him an exceptional figure in military history.
