    Background & context

In the third century BC, the Carthaginian Empire developed into one of the most powerful players in the western Mediterranean, its sphere of influence stretching from North Africa across the Iberian Peninsula. The Carthaginian army was characterized by exceptional diversity: in addition to core Libyan troops, the generals relied on a wide network of allied and mercenary contingents from Iberia, Gaul, Numidia, and other regions. Among the most distinctive elements of this force were the Numidian light cavalry and the legendary African war elephants, which were used on the battlefield as a psychological and tactical weapon. Hannibal Barca is considered one of the most significant military commanders of antiquity - his daring campaign across the Alps and his ability to forge heterogeneous troop contingents into a powerful army made him an exceptional figure in military history.

    On the tabletop

Hannibal in Warlord Resin leads an army that you organise into divisions by origin. The centre is carried by 12 bases of Libyan heavy infantry, alongside 12 bases each of Iberian scutarii and Celtic warriors as well as 6 bases each of Celtiberians and Italian allies, all with 20 figures. The 4 war elephants break ahead into the enemy front. On the wings ride 8 bases each of Numidian and Libyan-Phoenician cavalry, plus 4 bases each of Gallic and Spanish. The 8 Carthaginian commanders lead the bulk, the 4 Gallic-Celtic ones with standard bearers lead the Celts, and in front skirmish slingers, archers and javelinmen.
