    Product details

    Background & context

War elephants were among the most impressive and feared weapons of antiquity. Carthage built up its elephant corps after Hellenistic armies - particularly Pyrrhus of Epirus with his Indian elephants - had achieved impressive effects on the battlefield. In the course of the Punic Wars, these animals became a trademark of Carthaginian warfare: they were intended to break up enemy formations and panic cavalry. Most famously, they accompanied Hannibal on his audacious march over the Alps into Italy. The North African forest elephants used by Carthage were smaller than their Indian relatives but were nonetheless of considerable military importance.

    On the tabletop

Four war elephants with howdahs, four mahouts and ten crew figures reinforce your Carthaginian army in 13.5 mm Hail Caesar games. The beasts tear open closed formations and make horses shy, so you send them against dense infantry blocks or enemy cavalry. If your own infantry follows close behind, it can exploit the gaps they make. Carthage founded its elephant corps after facing Pyrrhus and led the animals against Rome in the Punic Wars.
