Product details

Background & context

A Roman marching camp was built afresh every evening: surveyors marked out the rectangle, the legionaries dug ditch and rampart, and then the rows of tents stood in the same order as always. Eight men shared a tent, the contubernium, the smallest unit of the legion, which cooked, slept and fought together. The larger tent of the centurion stood at the head of the row. Carthaginian armies were less strict about it, but the sight of canvas rows in the evening light was familiar to both sides of the Punic Wars.

On the tabletop

The centurion's tent and six contubernium tents make a field camp on your Epic Battles table. In Hail Caesar Epic Battles you can place it behind your own line or make it the target of a raid, since a camp was vulnerable and prized loot after a defeat. The simple tents pass as Roman or Carthaginian. Each tent represents a contubernium, the tent group of eight legionaries.
