Background & context

Carthage and Rome rarely fought their wars of the 3rd century BC with purely citizen armies. Both sides gathered contingents from half the Mediterranean: Hannibal marched across the Alps with Iberians and Gauls, and Rome placed Italian allies alongside its legions. Numidian horsemen and Balearic slingers were considered so valuable that both powers openly competed for them. Exactly this varied mix makes ancient battle lines on the gaming table so diverse.

On the tabletop

Hannibal crossed the Alps with Iberians and Gauls, Rome relied on its Italian allies, and both courted Numidians and Balearic slingers. This tan sprue for Hail Caesar Epic Battles gives you three strips each of Celtiberians and Italian infantry for the battle line. Five Spanish light and five Gallic heavy horsemen take the flanks, and four each of Caetrati, Ligurians, slingers and Numidians skirmish in front. Once painted, the figures serve either side.
