    Hintergrund & Einordnung

In their struggle for supremacy in the Western Mediterranean, both Rome and Carthage relied heavily on allied and mercenary warriors from a wide variety of peoples. Carthage recruited the majority of its forces from North African, Iberian, and Gallic mercenaries, as the city itself lacked a sufficient indigenous population base. The Romans, on the other hand, could draw on the conscription of their Italic allies, whose loyalty, however, was by no means taken for granted. Equestrian peoples like the Numidians were considered superior light cavalrymen in antiquity, while Iberian and Gallic warriors were known for their impetuosity and fighting prowess.

    Einsatz im Spiel

The Allied Troops Division supplements Roman and Carthaginian armies in the Punic Wars with flexible auxiliary troops. On the tabletop, it provides Numidian archers/skirmishers, Balearic slingers, Ligurian and Spanish skirmishers, and Gallic and Spanish cavalry.
