Background & context

In their struggle for supremacy in the Western Mediterranean, both Rome and Carthage relied heavily on allied and mercenary warriors from a wide variety of peoples. Carthage recruited the majority of its forces from North African, Iberian, and Gallic mercenaries, as the city itself lacked a sufficient indigenous population base. The Romans, on the other hand, could draw on the conscription of their Italic allies, whose loyalty, however, was by no means taken for granted. Equestrian peoples like the Numidians were considered superior light cavalrymen in antiquity, while Iberian and Gallic warriors were known for their impetuosity and fighting prowess.

On the tabletop

Neither Rome nor Carthage won its wars alone, and this box provides allies for both sides in Hail Caesar Epic Battles. Celtiberians and Italian allies come with six bases of 20 figures each for the battle line. You deploy Numidian archers, Balearic slingers, Ligurian light infantry and Spanish caetrati as skirmishers ahead of the line, while horsemen from Gaul and Spain guard the flanks. Shield decals are included.
