Die Ebenen Thessaliens waren das einzige Stück Griechenland, in dem sich Pferdezucht im großen Stil lohnte, und der dortige Landadel stellte seit archaischer Zeit die stärkste Reiterei des Landes. 479 v. Chr. stand sie bei Plataiai auf persischer Seite und machte den Hopliten das Leben schwer. Unter Alexander bildeten die Thessalier dann den linken Flügel als Gegenstück zu den Hetairoi und ritten in der Rautenformation, die ein schnelles Wenden in jede Richtung erlaubte.

On the tabletop

Riding bareback with a pair of spears each, to throw or to use at close quarters, three Thessalian horsemen reinforce your Greek cavalry. In Hail Caesar or Clash of Spears they are fast flank cavalry that harass hoplites and light troops and then quickly pull away. At Plataea in 479 BC the Thessalians fought on the Persian side, while under Alexander they held the left wing of the Macedonian army. That makes them suitable for several armies.
