    Product details

    Background & context

The Greek lead sling bullet was a weapon with a message: examples found on battlefields bear words such as "Take that" or the name of the general who had them cast. Xenophon relates how, during the retreat of the Ten Thousand in 401 BC, it was the Rhodian slingers who finally stopped the Persian horsemen from pressing the pursuit, because their lead shot carried further than any arrow. Rhodes remained the place to hire mercenary slingers well into the Hellenistic period, and both Philip II and Alexander took them on campaign. In front of the phalanx they belonged to the Psiloi, the light troops who opened the fighting and then fell back behind the shields.

    On the tabletop

Those who could not afford hoplite armour went to war as light troops armed with the sling. In Hail Caesar and Clash of Spears you deploy the eight slingers as skirmishers in front of your phalanx. They open the fight at range, harass the enemy with their shot and fall back behind their own shields before his heavy infantry arrives. Xenophon singles out the slingers of Rhodes, and as mercenaries they suit many armies.
