Background & context

Die Heere der griechischen Stadtstaaten bestanden aus Bürgern, die sich ihre Rüstung selbst kauften und in der Phalanx Schulter an Schulter kämpften. Geführt wurden sie nicht von Berufsoffizieren, sondern von gewählten Strategen und Taxiarchen, die in der ersten Reihe mitstanden und durch Beispiel befahlen. Woher ein Kontingent kam, erkannte man am Schildzeichen: die Keule Thebens, ein Dreizack für Poseidon, Buchstaben für die Heimatstadt. Deshalb ist der Schild bei griechischen Kommandofiguren das wichtigste Detail.

On the tabletop

A commander with raised sword and two with hoplite spears lead your Greek phalanx in Hail Caesar. Elected generals and taxiarchs stood in the front rank and led by example, so on the table you place them at the front of your hoplite blocks. The flat round shields offer plenty of space for shield devices, by which a contingent's home city was historically recognised, such as the club of Thebes. All figures are metal.
