Background & context

Der Hoplit war Bürger und Soldat in einer Person: Wer sich Panzer, Beinschienen und den schweren Rundschild leisten konnte, stand in der Schlachtlinie seiner Polis. Der Aspis deckte dabei auch den Nachbarn zur Linken, weshalb die Formation nur hielt, solange jeder seinen Platz behauptete. Beim Zusammenprall zweier Phalangen entschied Druck, nicht Fechtkunst. Schildzeichen wie das lakonische Lambda machten die Herkunft einer Einheit von weitem kenntlich.

On the tabletop

These eight hoplites add to a Greek phalanx in Hail Caesar or start a new unit. Hoplites fight in a closed formation in which every shield also protects the man beside it, so you lead them shoulder to shoulder straight at the enemy line. The different heads, weapons and shields make the unit look like the citizen levy of a polis. Shield devices such as the Laconian lambda show which city your men come from once they are painted.
