Background & context

Die Phalanx funktionierte nur, solange alle im Tritt blieben, und dafür sorgte der Aulos-Spieler. Sein Doppelrohrblatt war laut genug, um über Geschrei und Schildschläge hinweg das Tempo vorzugeben, und die Spartaner machten daraus eine Institution. Der Kommandeur stand dabei in der ersten Reihe, nicht dahinter: griechische Strategen kämpften mit, was die Verlustlisten der Stadtstaaten regelmäßig an der Spitze zeigt.

On the tabletop

With this plastic frame you place a commander and a piper at the head of your hoplite phalanx in Hail Caesar, and spare heads and weapon arms let you build both to your taste. Historically the aulos player set the pace with his loud double reed so the phalanx stayed in step, and the Spartans made it a fixed institution. The commander fought in the front rank, and that is where he stands on the table too.
