Germanic tribes were among Rome's most important adversaries north of the Alps, from the late Republican period to the Imperial era.

Background & context

Was römische Autoren als ein Volk beschrieben, war ein Flickenteppich aus Stämmen, die genauso oft gegeneinander wie gegen Rom kämpften. Bewaffnet war die Masse mit dem Speer, den Tacitus framea nennt, dazu ein Schild aus Brettern und Leder; Kettenhemd und Schwert blieben der dünnen Führungsschicht vorbehalten. Ihre Stärke lag im ersten Ansturm und im Gelände - Wald, Moor und Engpass, wo römische Formationen nichts wert waren.

On the tabletop

With 60 Germanic warriors you lead a tribal force against Rome or against the neighbouring tribe. Armoured and unarmoured bodies separate the few well-equipped retainers from the mass of ordinary fighters with sword, axe or club. Their strength lies in the first rush and in forest, marsh or narrow passes, where close-order formations falter. Eight standards with different totems and two horns supply your command figures.
