Background & context

Rom belieferte seine Gegner unfreiwillig: Nach 9 n. Chr. verschwanden drei Legionen samt Ausrüstung in Germanien, und auch danach wanderten Kettenhemden, Helme und Schwerter über Schlachtfelder, Handel und Söldnerdienst über den Limes. Germanische Anführer, die selbst in römischen Hilfstruppen gedient hatten, brachten Waffen und Taktik mit nach Hause. Wer Beute trug, zeigte damit Rang - und manchmal auch, wo er sie geholt hatte.

On the tabletop

Four Germanic warriors carrying captured Roman equipment stand out from the ordinary tribesmen in Hail Caesar. Put them in the front rank of a Germanic foot unit or at its head, because wearing Roman spoils was a sign of rank. They suit fighting after AD 9, when three legions and all their equipment were lost in Germania. Their opponents are the legions and auxiliaries of the early Empire on the frontier.
