Product details

Background & context

The Germanic peoples predominantly fought as foot soldiers, but a core group of aristocratic warriors engaged in combat on horseback. This mounted elite was renowned for its cold-bloodedness and endurance-their horses were considered as wild and tough as the riders themselves. Armed with throwing and thrusting spears as well as light javelins, they avoided direct frontal attacks, opting instead for flanking maneuvers and the pursuit of fleeing enemies. Armor and helmets were reserved for the wealthiest warriors; most rode into battle without significant body protection.

On the tabletop

The Germans mostly fought on foot, but a core of warriors, probably the nobility, rode into battle. With these eight metal riders you field that cavalry as a unit in Hail Caesar. It is suited to attacks on the flanks of Roman or Gallic opponents and supports your large warbands on foot. At Alesia in 52 BC Germanic horsemen fought on Caesar's side against the Gallic cavalry, which makes another possible scenario.
