Background & context

The Germanic tribes used archers as light skirmishers who harassed the enemy before the main battle. Tacitus describes the Germans as warriors who preferred open close combat - yet ranged fighters still played an important role in overcoming Roman formations. Especially in the dense forests of Germania, archers could provide valuable support from ambushes. The devastating ambush in the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD impressively demonstrated how effectively Germanic tribal warriors could act against Rome's most powerful legions in the right terrain.

On the tabletop

Among the Germanic tribes the bow played a minor role next to the javelin, yet finds from Nydam and Illerup show it was used. These eight archers add missile fire to the warriors of your Germanic army in Hail Caesar. From woods and cover they shoot at Roman columns on the march, as the legions of Varus experienced between the Ems and the Weser in AD 9. In late antiquity the bow gained ground among the Alamanni and Franks, so they fit those armies too.
