    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    Tank crews of the German Afrika Korps in the North African theater wore adapted tropical versions of the standard panzer uniform. Instead of the black panzer uniform with the iconic Totenkopf collar, they wore light khaki shirts, shorts, and either the panzer beret, tropical helmet, or tropical field cap. The Panzer III and Panzer IV were the DAK's main battle tanks in North Africa - the Pz III as the primary combat vehicle with a 3.7 cm or 5 cm KwK, and the Pz IV initially as an infantry support tank with a short 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24, later (from Ausf. F2 onwards) with the feared long 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/43 - the "Pz IV Special" that British tank commanders learned to dread. These men, under the scorching sun of the Libyan desert, led their tanks into the epic battles of Tobruk, Gazala, and El Alamein.
