Product details

Background & context

The first winter of the war in Russia, 1941/42, caught the Wehrmacht without usable winter kit. What the men wore was scraped together: civilian coats, captured Soviet items, improvised padded jackets. Only from 1942/43 did reversible winter suits, lined greatcoats, felt boots and fur caps reach the front in appreciable numbers. At thirty degrees below zero fuel and gun oil froze, and losses from the cold were at times higher than those from enemy action.

On the tabletop

Five German infantrymen in padded jackets, long greatcoats, hoods and fur caps take your force into battles in the snow on the Eastern Front. The rifleman with his Karabiner 98k fires from position, two men advance with submachine guns, one in a hooded coat throws a stick grenade and the fifth carries his rifle slung. The mixed clothing suits the Russian winters from 1941, when much of it was improvised. Set 2 lets you expand the squad.
