    Product details

    Background & context

The German rifle squad was built around its machine gun: the MG34 fired, while the riflemen carried ammunition, provided security and covered changes of position. In North Africa this doctrine ran into a problem that did not exist in the same way in Europe: sand. In the desert the finely made MG34 demanded constant care, dust protection for belt and bolt, and a man alongside who scanned the terrain with binoculars, because the heat made the air shimmer and distorted distances. Shallow hollows with a few piled-up stones were often the only cover.

    On the tabletop

The prone MG34 and its spotter form the base of fire for an Afrika Korps squad, while two riflemen, kneeling and prone, cover the position. On the table you place the team in a shallow scrape or behind piled stones with a long view across the desert. The man with the binoculars scans the ground, because the shimmering heat made distances deceptive. While the machine gun pins the enemy, your riflemen from Set 1 and Set 2 move forward.
