Background & context

Polybios berichtet von den Gaesaten, keltischen Söldnern von der Rhône, die bei Telamon 225 v. Chr. nackt in vorderster Reihe standen, während ihre Verbündeten Hosen und Mäntel trugen. Der Auftritt sollte den Gegner erschüttern, war aber auch religiös gemeint - der Krieger lieferte sich dem Schicksal aus. Gegen die römischen Wurfspeere half die Geste nichts, die Gaesaten wurden aufgerieben. Diodor erwähnt das mit Kalkwasser gebleichte, nach hinten gekämmte Haar der Kelten.

On the tabletop

These 24 warriors go into battle wearing nothing but a sword belt and stand in the front rank of your Gallic army. Their appearance is meant to shake the enemy before the rest of the tribal host follows. Against javelins only their shields protect them, so they look for the quickest way into close combat. The command arms let you build your own leaders, and the lime-bleached hair and long moustaches deserve attention when you paint them.
